Cultural Currents: 13th to 17th Centuries

The period from the 13th to the 17th centuries in India was a time of significant political change and instability, marked by invasions and the rise of new rulers. Despite these challenges, Indian culture not only survived but also grew richer and more diverse. This was possible due to its deep roots, ability to adapt, and the active participation of people from all walks of life.

This era is defined by three key patterns:

• The continuation of long-standing traditional practices.
• Patronage for arts and literature from rulers of various backgrounds.
• The creative mixing of Indian traditions with new influences, particularly from Persian and Arabic cultures.

Belief Systems

The arrival of invaders who followed a monotheistic Islam created a stark contrast with the diverse religious landscape of India, which had many schools of thought and no single holy book. This led to conflict and the destruction of some sacred temples and sites. However, unlike in other parts of the world where indigenous faiths were suppressed, in India, native belief systems continued to thrive alongside Islam. This resilience was largely powered by the Bhakti and Sufi movements.

The power of the bhakti tradition

The bhakti mārga, or the path of devotion, became incredibly popular during this period. It offered a way to achieve mokṣha (realisation of Truth or spiritual release) through personal devotion, without the need for complex rituals or priests.

• Spiritual Resilience: The Bhakti movement provided a source of strength and cultural continuity for society during a time of political and religious upheaval.
• Accessible to All: Saints composed verses and songs in local languages, making their messages of love, compassion, and equality understandable to everyone.
• Unifying Force: People from all sections of society came together to sing bhajans (devotional songs), creating a sense of unity through music and dance.

Regional saints and their messages

Bhakti saints emerged across India, spreading messages that challenged rigid social structures and promoted a more personal connection with God.

• Kabirdas (Kabir): A 15th-century saint from North India who preached the idea of one God and criticized the empty rituals of both Hinduism and Islam. His simple and direct couplets, or dohas, became very popular.
• Ravidas: An early 16th-century saint born into a family of leather-workers, he composed poetry that promoted equality and challenged the rigid barriers of varṇa (social order) and jāti (caste).
• Guru Nanak: He traveled widely, spreading the message of one God and the equality of all people. His teachings form the basis of Sikhism and are preserved in the Guru Granth Sāhib.
• Other Saints: The tradition was carried forward by saints like Mirabai in Rajasthan, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the east, Tukaram and Dnyaneshwar in the west, and Purandaradasa in the south.

Sufism

Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that focuses on an inner, personal search for God through devotion. It found a welcoming home in India and created a bridge between different communities.

• Devotional Music: Sufi saints like Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and Nizamuddin Auliya used music as a way to connect with God. They developed qawwālīs, a form of devotional song that fused Persian, Arabic, and Indian musical traditions.
• Shared Spiritual Practices: Sufis adopted Indian techniques like meditation (known as zikr) and asceticism, which were similar to the paths to mokṣha in Vedantic traditions.
• Promoting Unity: The Bhakti and Sufi traditions often overlapped. Figures like the Mughal prince Dara Shikoh saw Vedanta and Sufism as two paths leading to the same universal truth, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

Musical Traditions - Continuation and Evolution

Music and dance have always been central to Indian culture. During this period, these traditions continued to evolve, blending old forms with new influences.

• Two Streams of Classical Music: Indian classical music developed into two related but distinct streams:
  • Hindustani Music: Prevalent in North India, it incorporated Persian and Arabic influences. The ancient genre of dhrupad was refined under the patronage of rulers like Raja Mansingh Tomar of Gwalior. The legendary musician Tansen (Rāmtanu Pandey), one of the nine ratnas in Emperor Akbar's court, was a master of this style.
  • Carnatic Music: Developed in South India, it remained largely unaffected by Persian and Arabic influences. Purandaradasa is considered the father of Carnatic music.
• Creation of New Forms: Amīr Khusro, an Indo-Persian Sufi poet and musician, is credited with developing the qawwālī by fusing different singing traditions.
• Evolution of Instruments: Modern instruments like the sitar and tabla evolved during these centuries. The tabla, for example, drew from the traditions of older Indian drums like the ancient pakhāwaj.

From Walls to Paper - Miniature Paintings

With the arrival of paper in India around the 10th or 11th century, the art of painting shifted from large wall murals to small, detailed works known as miniature paintings. Two major styles flourished.

Rajput Painting

This tradition thrived from the 15th to the 19th century and was deeply rooted in Indian culture.

• Themes: Depicted traditional Hindu themes, often scenes from the Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata, and Bhāgavata Purāṇa.
• Style: Characterized by vibrant colors and idealized forms of beauty, such as women with large eyes, and motifs like lotus flowers, elephants, and peacocks.

Mughal Miniature Painting

This style developed under the patronage of the Mughal emperors and was heavily influenced by Persian art.

• Themes: Focused on secular subjects like court scenes, portraits, landscapes, and hunting expeditions.
• Technique: Reached its peak in Akbar's royal atelier (workshop), where artists often collaborated on a single painting.

Changing Landscapes - Gardens

Gardens have been a part of Indian urban landscapes for thousands of years, known by names like udyāna and vātikā. The arrival of the Mughals introduced a new style of garden design.

• The Charbagh: The Mughals brought the Persian charbagh style, a formal garden divided into four parts by walkways or flowing water. These gardens were meant to represent the four gardens of Paradise mentioned in the Quran.
• Features: These gardens included water channels, fountains, and terraces, and were often built around tombs, forts, and mosques.
• Influence: This geometric style later influenced other gardens, such as those at Amer Fort in Jaipur, where water channels were used for both irrigation and aesthetic beauty.

Women in Society - Contextual Variations in Their Role and Status

The status of women varied significantly across different regions and social classes during this period.

• Impact of Invasions in the North: Invasions and military campaigns from the 12th century onwards made life insecure. Women and children were often captured and sold as slaves. To protect women, their public appearance declined.
• The Purdah System: Practices like purdah (veiling) became more widespread in parts of North India. This was partly for protection and partly a symbol of high status, as it was practiced by the Muslim ruling class.
• Powerful Royal Women: Despite these restrictions, some women in royal households held immense power.
  • Razia Sultan (13th century): The first and only female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, she led armies and established educational institutions but was ultimately overthrown by nobles who opposed a woman ruler.
  • Nur Jahan (17th century): As the wife of Emperor Jahangir, she was a powerful force in the Mughal empire, issuing royal orders and even having coins minted in her name.
• Continuity in the South: In South India, the situation for women did not change as dramatically. Elite women in empires like Vijayanagara continued to play active roles in administration, trade, and public life. They issued grants, made donations to temples, and influenced political decisions.

Education and Knowledge Traditions

Despite the disruption caused by invasions, India's long tradition of learning persisted through a decentralized system.

• Traditional Institutions: Education continued in gurukulas, maṭhas (monasteries), temple schools, Buddhist vihāras, and Jain pallis. In the South, centers like Sringeri were famous for advanced learning.
• New Institutions: Under Muslim rule, madrasās were established to provide instruction in Arabic, Persian, and Islamic studies.
• A Major Loss: The destruction of great universities like Nālandā and Vikramaśhilā in the late 12th century was an immense cultural loss for India and the world.
• Resilience of Local Systems: Because education was decentralized, local village schools (pāṭhaśhālās) and apprenticeship systems for crafts were not easily destroyed by political turmoil and helped preserve knowledge.

Vocational education and knowledge sharing

Skills for crafts and trades were passed down through hands-on training and apprenticeships within families or guilds (jāti and śhreṇi systems).

Growth of Literature and Language

This was a period of extraordinary creativity in literature, with regional languages flourishing alongside the courtly language of Persian.

• Rise of Regional Literature: Bhakti saints composed works in languages like Bengali, Marathi, and Kannada, making literature accessible to the masses. Rulers like Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara and the Gajapati kings of Odisha were great patrons of regional poets.
• Persian as a Court Language: As the language of the Mughal administration, Persian became a major literary language. This led to a rich exchange between cultures.
• Translation Projects: Many important Sanskrit texts, such as Bhāskarāchārya’s mathematical work Līlavatī and Kalhaṇa’s history of Kashmir, the Rājatarangiṇi, were translated into Persian. This helped preserve and spread Indian knowledge.

The case of Dara Shikoh

Dara Shikoh, the elder son of Shah Jahan, was a great scholar who sought to find common ground between Hinduism and Islam. In the 17th century, he led a project to translate 52 Upaniṣhads from Sanskrit into Persian. These translations eventually reached Europe and influenced major Western philosophers. He was later executed by his brother Aurangzeb.

The development of Urdu

Urdu is a prime example of cultural synthesis.

• It developed in the Ganga-Yamuna plains from the local Hindi/Hindavi language, integrating a large vocabulary from Arabic and Persian.
• Amir Khusrau is often called the 'father of Urdu literature'.
• A regional variant called Dakhini also developed in the Deccan, absorbing words from Telugu and Marathi.

Developments in Science and Technology

India's culture of scientific inquiry continued to produce significant advancements, even during this unstable period.

• Mathematics:
  • Narayana Pandita wrote the Ganitakaumudī, a major mathematical treatise, in the 14th century.
  • The Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics, led by figures like Madhava, made groundbreaking contributions to calculus, including developing the infinite series for π for the first time in the world.
  • In 1500, Nilakantha Somayaji of the same school proposed a planetary model that predated the famous model of Copernicus.
• Chemistry and Technology:
  • India developed a unique distillation process to produce pure zinc.
  • Indian saltpetre was used to make gunpowder and also as a refrigerant to cool water.
• Medicine: Traditional medical systems like Ayurveda, Siddha (in Tamil Nadu), and Unani (introduced from West Asia) were widely practiced and their knowledge was passed down through texts and oral traditions.

Regional Architectural Developments

Architecture from this period reflects a powerful blend of traditional Indian styles and new influences.

• Continuation of Temple Building: The construction of grand temples continued, especially in regions with strong local rulers. Examples include the Sūrya Mandir at Konark (Odisha, 13th century) and the Jain Ranakpur temple (Rajasthan, 15th century).
• Cultural Resilience: A key feature of this era was the reconstruction of temples that had been destroyed during invasions. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, which was damaged in the 14th century, was rebuilt by the end of the same century, showing the deep-rooted spirit of cultural preservation.
• Blending of Styles: Palaces like the Sheesh Mahal ('Palace of Mirrors') in Amer Fort, Jaipur, showcase a fusion of Rajput and Mughal aesthetics.

Cultural Exchange in Daily Life

The interaction between different cultures was most visible in the everyday lives of people, especially in food and clothing.

Food

• New ingredients and cooking methods were adopted. The use of curd for marination and ghee became more popular in imperial kitchens.
• Dishes that we consider Indian today were actually adaptations of foreign foods.
  • The samosa is an Indian version of the Persian sambūseh, which was originally stuffed with meat. Indians adapted it with a filling of potatoes and peas.
  • The jalebi evolved from the Persian zalabiyeh.
  • Naan bread, cooked in a clay oven, also has Persian origins.

Clothing

• Indians adapted new styles of clothing while retaining traditional attire.
• The jama (a tunic-like dress) and pyjama were adopted in courtly fashion, influenced by Persian styles. The angrakha is another garment that evolved from this cultural exchange.
• At the same time, the traditional sari, with its many regional variations, continued to be a primary garment for women.

• Cultural Synthesis: This period was defined by both the continuation of ancient traditions and the creative integration of new ideas in art, music, language, food, and clothing.
• Bhakti and Sufism: These devotional movements were a powerful unifying force, promoting equality and bridging religious divides during politically unstable times.
• Evolution of Arts: Indian classical music split into the Hindustani and Carnatic streams. Miniature painting flourished, with Rajput and Mughal styles influencing each other.
• Architectural Resilience: New architectural styles emerged, and the reconstruction of destroyed temples demonstrated the culture's strength and vitality.
• Preservation of Knowledge: Despite the loss of major universities, education and scientific advancement continued through decentralized systems and the translation of important texts between Sanskrit and Persian.
