What Is Demography?

Have you ever wondered how many people live in your city, your country, or even the entire world? The study that answers these questions is called demography. It is the scientific study of the human population, looking at its size, structure, and how it is spread out. Demography doesn't just count people; it examines their characteristics like age, sex, occupation, education, and religion. Most importantly, it studies how these features change over time due to three main factors: births, deaths, and the movement of people (migration).

Understanding demography is incredibly useful for running a country or a business.

• Governments use demographic information to plan for the future. If they know a region has a lot of young children, they can plan to build more schools. If a population is getting older, more healthcare facilities will be needed. This data helps in planning for everything from roads and housing to water and energy supplies.
• Businesses use it to understand their customers. By looking at characteristics like age, gender, and income, a company can create products that better match what people need and want.

In short, studying a country's population size and structure of population—how it is made up based on different characteristics—is essential for managing resources effectively.

Population at a Glance

The world's population has grown dramatically over the last century. In 1950, there were about 2.5 billion people on Earth. By 2025, this number is expected to be 8.2 billion and is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. A major reason for this growth is improved healthcare, which has allowed people to live longer lives.

However, this growth is not the same everywhere and has started to slow down overall.

• In 2023, India surpassed China to become the world's most populous country. Today, Indians make up about 17 percent of the world's population.
• Some countries, like China, Japan, and Italy, are already seeing their populations shrink.
• Meanwhile, countries in Africa, such as Nigeria and Ethiopia, continue to experience rapid population growth.

According to United Nations projections, the world population will likely peak at around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s and then begin to slowly decline as birth rates fall globally.

What Determines the Population of a Country?

The population of any country is the result of long-term changes in three key areas: the number of births, the number of deaths, and migration (the movement of people).

Birth and fertility rates

The birth rate is a simple measure of how fast a population is growing. A high birth rate means many babies are being born, leading to faster population growth. A low birth rate slows this growth and can even cause the population to shrink.

Closely related is the fertility rate, which is the average number of children a woman is likely to have in her lifetime.

• A fertility rate of 2.1 is called the replacement level fertility rate. This is the number of children needed to replace both parents, keeping the population stable. (The extra 0.1 accounts for those who may not survive to adulthood).
• If the fertility rate is above 2.1, the population will likely grow.
• If it is below 2.1, the population may shrink over time.

Many factors contribute to falling fertility rates, including:

• Education for Women: As more women receive formal education and join the workforce, they often marry later and have fewer children.
• Urbanisation: The cost of living is often higher in cities, which encourages people to have smaller families.

Death or mortality rate

The death or mortality rate is another crucial indicator. A lower mortality rate is a sign of good healthcare and nutrition in a country.

A related concept is life expectancy, which is the average number of years a newborn is expected to live. India has made huge progress in this area.

• Child mortality fell from 271 per 1,000 children in 1950 to 28 in 2023.
• Life expectancy at birth has risen from around 30 years at independence to 70 years in 2024.

Migration

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. People often migrate for better jobs, education, or to escape natural disasters or political instability.

• Influx of Migrants: Areas that receive many migrants see their populations grow. For example, cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have grown significantly due to migration from other parts of the country.
• Challenges: A high concentration of people can put a strain on resources like water and land, and on services like housing and transportation.

How Do Countries Experience Population Change?

Just like a person goes through different life stages, a country's population also goes through predictable changes over time. This process is called the demographic transition, which usually occurs in three stages as a country develops economically.

1. Stage 1: High birth and death rates. In this stage, both birth and death rates are high. Poor healthcare and low literacy are common. As a result, population growth is very slow or stagnant. India was in this stage from 1901-1921.
2. Stage 2: Death rate falls, but birth rates are still high. As a country develops, healthcare and sanitation improve, causing the death rate to fall. However, birth rates remain high, leading to a period of rapid population growth. India entered this stage after 1951.
3. Stage 3: Death rate is low, and birth rate begins to fall. In this stage, death rates stay low, and birth rates start to decline. This happens due to factors like urbanisation, higher incomes, more education, and more women in the workforce. This slows down population growth. If the fertility rate drops well below the replacement level, the population will start to shrink, as seen in countries like Japan, Italy, and South Korea. India's fertility rate began declining in the mid-1980s and is now below the replacement level.

India's Population: Composition and Trends

As the world's most populous country, India has a diverse and dynamic population. To understand it better, we look at its population composition, which includes characteristics like age and gender.

Improvement in India's sex ratio

The sex ratio is a key indicator that measures gender balance. It is calculated as the number of females per 1,000 males. A balanced sex ratio is crucial for social stability and equitable development. In India, the sex ratio has been improving:

• In the 2001 Census, the sex ratio was 933 females per 1,000 males.
• By the 2011 Census, it had improved to 943 females per 1,000 males.

The Population Structure Diagram

A population structure diagram, often called a population pyramid, is a graph that shows the distribution of a population by age groups and gender. It gives a clear picture of a country's demographic profile.

• Wide Base: A pyramid with a wide base indicates a high birth rate and a young, growing population (like Nigeria).
• Wide Middle: A shape that is widest in the middle suggests a large working-age population and a stable population.
• Wide Top: A top-heavy shape means there are many older people, indicating an ageing and potentially shrinking population (like Japan).

Over the years, India's population pyramid has changed significantly.

• In the 1950s: It was a classic pyramid with a very wide base, showing high birth rates and a very young population. Life expectancy was low, so the top was very narrow.
• In recent years: The pyramid has become more bell-shaped. The base is narrower, meaning fewer children are being born. The middle part, representing the working-age population (ages 15-64), has become much wider. The top is also getting wider as people live longer.

This shows that India has moved from a young, fast-growing population to a more balanced one. In the future, it is expected to start ageing, similar to what is happening in China and Japan now.

India's Demographic Dividend - A Limited Window of Opportunity

India is currently in a very beneficial demographic position. With nearly 65% of its population in the working-age group (15-59 years) and a median age of only 28, India has a large, young, and productive workforce. This potential for economic growth driven by a young population structure is known as the demographic dividend.

However, this opportunity is limited. Projections show that the growth of India's young population will slow down and eventually decline after 2050. The number of children under 15 has already peaked and is now falling. After 2050, India will begin transitioning towards an older population.

The Challenge of an Ageing Population

An ageing population brings its own set of challenges:

• Healthcare Pressure: Older adults typically require more healthcare, putting a strain on medical systems.
• Economic Slowdown: With more people retiring and fewer young workers to replace them, the economy can slow down.
• Pension and Social Services: Governments face challenges in paying for pensions and providing services for the elderly with fewer taxpayers to fund them.

To make the most of its demographic dividend, India must invest heavily in quality education, skills training, and healthcare for its young population. Furthermore, creating supportive infrastructure, such as childcare facilities, can help more women participate in the workforce, turning the demographic dividend into lasting progress.
