A vector whose magnitude is unity (1 unit) is called a unit vector. The unit vector in the direction of $\vec{a}$ is given by the formula: $\hat{a} = \frac{1}{|\vec{a}|} \vec{a}$ This is valid provided $\vec{a} \neq \vec{0}$.
