CBSE Case Study Questions: How to Crack Them Without Losing Easy Marks

Here is a strange thing about case study questions. When students get one wrong and you sit with them afterwards, they almost always know the concept. They can state the formula. They can solve a plain version of the same problem in seconds. And yet in the exam, on a question built from that very concept, they dropped marks. The concept was never the problem. The reading was.

Case-based questions, which is what CBSE officially calls them, are one of the clearest examples of the shift toward competency-focused questions. The board is no longer content to ask whether you can recall a formula. It wants to know whether you can pull a formula out of a real situation described in plain language, and that turns out to be a genuinely different skill. Let us look at what these questions actually demand and how to stop losing easy marks on them.

Why You Lose Marks on Concepts You Already Know

A case study question begins with a passage. It might describe a shopkeeper, a water tank, a cricket score, a savings plan, a road trip. Then it attaches three to five sub-questions to that passage. The information you need is all in the passage, sometimes stated plainly and sometimes buried inside a sentence that reads like a story.

That framing is exactly what makes an easy concept feel hard. In a normal question, the numbers are handed to you cleanly. In a case study, you have to find them, decide which ones matter, and figure out what is being asked before you can even begin the calculation you already know how to do. Under exam pressure, with the clock moving, students skim the passage once, grab the first numbers they see, and start solving. Half the time they solve the wrong thing beautifully.

How to Read the Case Study Questions Class 10 Maths Papers Set

There is a simple discipline that turns case studies from a gamble into a routine, and it costs you barely a minute.

Read the passage once, all the way through, before you look at any sub-question. Your only goal on this first pass is to understand the situation, not to solve anything. What is happening here? Who is doing what? What is changing?

Then read it a second time with your pen moving. Underline every number, every unit, and every phrase that carries a quantity, even when the quantity is described in words rather than digits. A sentence like she saves a hundred rupees more each month is data, even though it looks like a story. Marking it now means you will not miss it later.

Now, and only now, read the first sub-question. Before writing anything, physically point your pen back at the part of the passage that answers it. Every sub-question maps to something in the text. If you cannot find where in the passage a question is anchored, you have misread either the question or the passage, and it is far cheaper to discover that now than three lines into a wrong solution. This habit of mapping each sub-question back to the passage is the single most valuable thing you can practise for case-based questions.

A Short Worked Illustration

Consider a Class 10 Maths passage of the kind you will actually meet.

Riya decides to save for a bicycle. In January she saves two hundred rupees. Every month after that, she saves one hundred rupees more than she saved the previous month.

The sub-questions might be: how much does she save in the month of June; what is the total amount she has saved by the end of the year; and in which month does her monthly saving first cross one thousand rupees.

The concept here is arithmetic progressions, which every Class 10 student can handle. Her savings form an AP with first term two hundred and common difference one hundred. But watch how each sub-question demands you read carefully.

June is the sixth month, so you need the sixth term. Two hundred plus five times one hundred gives seven hundred rupees. Notice this question asks for one month's saving, not a running total.

The second question asks for the total by year end, which is a completely different quantity. Now you need the sum of twelve terms, not a single term. That sum works out to nine thousand rupees. A student who does not read the shift from monthly amount to cumulative total will happily apply the wrong formula and lose the mark on a concept they know cold.

The third question asks when her monthly saving first crosses a thousand. Setting two hundred plus a step of one hundred greater than one thousand, you find it happens in the tenth month, October, when she saves eleven hundred rupees. Again, the maths is trivial. The care is in noticing that this is a monthly figure, not a total, and that first crosses means you want the earliest month that qualifies.

Three sub-questions, one easy concept, and three different ways to slip if you are reading fast. That is the whole nature of case studies in one example.

Managing Three to Five Parts and the Clock

Because a case study carries several sub-parts, it can feel heavier than it is, and that feeling makes students rush. Resist it. Spend your first minute reading and marking, as described above, and treat that minute as an investment that protects every mark that follows.

Then work the sub-questions in order, because they are usually arranged from simpler to harder and later parts sometimes build on earlier answers. If one sub-part genuinely stumps you, do not let it swallow your time. Note it, move to the next, and come back. The parts are marked separately, so a blank on part three does not cost you parts four and five. And keep your working visible, because in a multi-step case study, method marks are real marks even when a final number slips.
