How to Answer Assertion-Reason Questions in CBSE Class 10 Science

There is a moment in almost every board exam when you turn a page and feel a small flush of relief. Two short statements, four options, no long answer to write out. Assertion-reason questions look like the easiest marks on the paper. And then, three questions in, you notice something uncomfortable: you are no longer sure whether you are reading a science fact or solving a logic puzzle. The relief quietly turns into doubt, and doubt is exactly what this format is built to expose.

If you understand what the question is really testing, that doubt disappears. Assertion-reason is not a memory question wearing a disguise. It is a reasoning question, and reasoning questions reward students who slow down for ten seconds instead of speeding up. The Question That Hides Two Questions

Every assertion-reason item gives you two statements. The first is called the Assertion (A) — a claim about something. The second is called the Reason (R) — a separate statement offered as the explanation for the assertion. Below them sit four options, and your job is to decide how the two statements relate to each other.

Notice the trick already built into the design. You are not being asked only whether the statements are true. You are being asked whether the reason actually explains the assertion. Those are two different judgements, and the whole difficulty of the format lives in the gap between them.

How Assertion Reason Questions Class 10 Science Papers Are Built

The four options almost never change. Once you memorise their logic, you will recognise them across every subject. They are:

The first option: both the assertion and the reason are true, and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion. Everything lines up, and R genuinely tells you why A is true.

The second option: both the assertion and the reason are true, but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion. Both statements are correct facts on their own, yet R has nothing to do with why A is true. This is the option students miss most often, and we will return to it in a moment.

The third option: the assertion is true, but the reason is false.

The fourth option: the assertion is false, but the reason is true.

Read those four again and you will see they map to a simple grid. Is A true or false? Is R true or false? And if both are true, does R explain A? Three small decisions, made in order, land you on the right option every single time. The mistake is trying to feel your way to the answer instead of working through those three decisions deliberately.

The Trap Almost Everyone Falls Into

The most dangerous option is the second one, and the reason it is dangerous is psychological. When you read two true statements next to each other, your brain wants to connect them. It assumes that because both are correct, one must explain the other. The board knows this, and it builds questions precisely to punish that assumption.

Here is a clean Class 10 Science example.

Assertion (A): Sodium metal is stored under kerosene.

Reason (R): Sodium is a metal.

Read them slowly. Is the assertion true? Yes, sodium is stored under kerosene in the laboratory. Is the reason true? Yes, sodium is a metal. So both statements are correct, and a hurried student ticks the first option, feeling confident, and loses the mark.

But ask the real question: does being a metal explain why sodium is stored under kerosene? It does not. Plenty of metals, iron and copper among them, are not stored under kerosene at all. Sodium is stored that way because it reacts so violently with the oxygen and moisture in air that it can catch fire. That reactivity is the actual explanation, and it is nowhere in statement R. Both statements are true, but the reason is unrelated to the assertion. The correct answer is the second option, not the first.

Once you have seen this trap once, you start seeing it everywhere. Both statements true is not a signal to relax. It is a signal to ask one more question.

A Method That Works Every Time

The students who never lose marks on this format all do roughly the same thing, whether or not they can describe it. You can copy it directly.

First, read the assertion completely on its own and decide, out loud in your head, whether it is true or false. Do not glance at the reason yet. Let A stand alone.

Second, read the reason on its own and decide whether it is true or false, as if the assertion were not even on the page. This independence matters. If you let a convincing reason make a shaky assertion feel true, you have already been caught.

Third, and only if both came out true, ask the linking question. Put the word because between them. Say to yourself, the assertion is true because the reason. If that sentence actually holds together as an explanation, choose the first option. If the sentence sounds true but does not genuinely explain anything, choose the second.

Fourth, match your three decisions to the four options and commit. There is no fifth step, and there is no benefit to second-guessing once the logic is done.

The whole method takes fifteen seconds and it converts a guess into a certainty. Practise it slowly a few dozen times and it becomes automatic, which is exactly what you want when the clock is running in the actual exam.

A few errors show up again and again, and all of them are avoidable. The first is reading the two statements as a single sentence, which erases the whole point of judging them separately. The third is letting the science of the reason distract you from checking whether the assertion is even correct. And the fourth, quietly the most common, is rushing because the question looked short.
