HOTS Questions in CBSE Exams: How to Prepare for What You Cannot Cram

Most exam advice is about how to remember more. HOTS questions are the one part of the paper where that advice is useless. You can memorise every derivation in your Physics book, recite every definition perfectly, and still stare at a HOTS question with no idea where to begin. This is not a gap in your revision. Notice that no formula, sitting alone in your memory, answers this. To reason through it you have to recognise that with the battery connected the voltage is held constant, so as the capacitance rises the charge and the stored energy rise with it, drawn from the battery. Then you have to see that with the battery disconnected the charge is held constant instead, so as the capacitance rises the voltage falls and the stored energy falls. The whole question turns on a single insight, which quantity is being held constant, and that insight is not something you can look up. You have to construct it from concepts you understand.

That is what HOTS tests. Not whether you know the formula, but whether you understand the physics well enough to use it somewhere new. What HOTS Questions Class 12 Physics Papers Really Demand

The demand behind every HOTS question in a subject like Physics is the same, even when the surface changes. The paper is checking whether you can take a principle you have learned and carry it into a scenario it was not taught in.
